Legend: According to Hindu mythology, the gods released a swan with a lotus in its beak from the Swarg or heaven. The place where the swan would drop the lotus would be the place where Lord Brahma would perform a grand yagna. Pushkar was that place, and it came to be called Pushkar ever since. Pushkar is 14 km from Ajmer and revered as one of the five 'Dhams' the must visit pilgrimage spots for the Hindus.
Goddess Gayatri: Goddess Gayatri is the consort of Lord Brahma and is said to have stood by him while he performed the yajna at Pushkar. Goddess Gayatri was said to have been an untouchable. Legend says that to purify her she was put into the mouth of a cow and taken out from the other end.
